Important Notice: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. While your PC will continue to operate after this date, Microsoft will stop providing essential services like security patches and technical assistance that keep your system secure and running smoothly.
Why Business Owners Must Act Now
- Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your computer becomes increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks, malware, and viruses. Protecting your business data means upgrading to a supported Windows version is non-negotiable.
- Software Compatibility Concerns: Most applications are designed to work with the latest operating systems. After Windows 10's support ends, some programs may malfunction or fail to operate entirely.
- Regulatory Compliance Risks: Businesses handling sensitive data or adhering to strict regulations risk non-compliance if they continue using outdated systems, potentially leading to fines or legal challenges.
What Are Your Upgrade Options?
Microsoft recommends upgrading to the latest Windows version before support ends. However, not all Windows 10 PCs meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11. Attempting to upgrade incompatible devices will result in error messages.
If your current PC isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these alternatives:
- Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
- Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) for temporary protection
- Switch to a Linux operating system as an alternative
- Continue using Windows 10 without updates (not recommended due to security risks)
Always remember to back up your important files before making any system changes to prevent data loss.
Extended Security Updates (ESU) Explained
If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, Microsoft offers ESU for Windows 10, providing security updates for one year beyond the end-of-life date. This is a temporary fix, not a long-term solution.
To access ESU, you can pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points. There is also a free option which requires enabling Windows Backup to sync your settings and files to OneDrive. Keep in mind, OneDrive's free storage is limited to 5 GB, so you may need to purchase additional space for large backups.
Don't delay—register for ESU before October 14 to ensure your system remains protected.
